Dave grew up in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He is married to Johanna and they have four grown children. Dave enjoys hunting and fishing and is also a part-time guide outfitter, horse breeder and farmer. He played competitive hockey & lacrosse and was a member of two National Championship teams - The University of Alberta Golden Bears (hockey) in 1964, and the Prince George Molson Oldstyler Lacrosse Club in 1974.

Dave has practiced criminal law throughout Central and Northern British Columbia since 1968. He travels widely in connection with his defence work and has appeared in almost every Provincial Court in British Columbia, as well as in the Supreme Court of British Columbia and the British Columbia Court of Appeal. Dave was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1993.

Dave’s main area of practice is criminal defence law;  this includes defending cases of murder, arson, sexual assault and Wildlife Act offences. He is highly experienced in drug offences and impaired driving charges, having been involved in literally thousands of cases. He often utilises the services of technical experts in his cases, such as those trained in the fields of engineering, polygraph testing and alcohol & drug ingestion and elimination.
